BOULAAOUAN, BERBER EXPERIENCE
This day visit takes you into the foothills of the High Atlas. You then spend the day in a fine example of a Berber village in Boulaouane.
If you wish to actually be a part of Berber culture (rather than simply passing by such villages), you will learn much about this fascinating lifestyle (in a what looks like a most challenging environment) then this is a superb experience that is very impactful.
In the village it is very much an immersive and hands-on experience, with everyone very much taking part in traditional activities. Farming and its produce, Berber traditions and culture, traditional foods are all covered during this day.
Some guided hiking too (gentle or moderate, short or long, as you wish) in the village environs can be incorporated too. This opens up the opportunity to earn more and to perhaps come across “happenstance encounters”. Such encounters can very much very often become special highlights to their day, unique to you during your particular time here.

The Boulaaouane Berber Village Experience
This visit is all engrossing. You become part of Berber village culture, traditions and skills. As well as there being much to see, there is much in which to participate.
You first travel out from Marrakech to the traditional Berber village of Boulaouane. This village is one of many that are situated in the High Atlas. In the village it is very much an immersive and hands-on experience, with everyone very much taking part in traditional activities.
On arrival, first there is a welcoming tea making demonstration. Tea is then enjoyed with cakes. Everyone should carefully note all the stages in the tea making process as these newly acquired skills will be called upon later on in the visit.
You are then split into 3 teams.
Team 1 will prepare Tagines
Team 2 will prepare Berber bread in a traditional oven
Team 3 will prepare Amlou using a stone mill, quern stones (a tasty dip made from crushed roasted almonds (CAUTION: CONTAINS NUTS), honey and argan oil.
Then it's lunchtime, partly consisting of foodstuffs made by yourselves.
After lunch take a guided short walk to explore the area and then back to the Berber Cultural Centre. Here a tea making contest is enjoyed with a prize to the winner. Then enjoy having tea, coffee with msemen, amlou, olive oil.
Late afternoon return to Marrakech.
NOTE: For a fully immersive Berber experience, you may wish to overnight in Boulaouane before either returning to Marrakech the next day or continuing on with your travelling Tour. By staying overnight, you will have the additional experiences:
Learning how to make handmade couscous.
Learning how to write names in Arabic and Tamazight
Singing and dancing with locals who, by now, are welcoming friends
